Summer School Day 5: White Space
One of our favorite regular educational series is our set of Summer School classes. Understanding and internalizing different design concepts allows you to bring your ideas to life. With a little practice, these ideas will quickly become intuitive, leading your card designs to come together with minimal effort.
We've reached the final day of summer school, and hope that even if you were already familiar with these ideas, you've been inspired to revisit these time-tested concepts. Keep reading for today's lesson, and all the details for submitting your homework for an opportunity to win an MFT shopping spree.
You still have more than a week to complete your homework, so no excuses (not even an eager dog!) for not participating! Create a unique project for each homework lesson to be eligible to win the grand prize.
Today’s Lesson: White Space
The idea of white space doesn’t refer to a primarily white card (though often, as is the case with today’s project, this is true) but rather, the idea of leaving a significant portion of your design open, free from embellishment, allowing your focal point to truly shine.
Karolyn's take on white space is fresh, modern, and exemplifies this concept in vivid detail. You'll notice how the upper half of the card provides ample "resting" space for your eyes, allowing her dreamy Polaroid-framed scene to shine as bright as the sun element she's tucked into the upper corner. ☀️ I don't know about you, but just as the sentiment alludes, I definitely wish I was there!

This week you’re the student, and instead of grades, we’ve got prizes! Using today’s lesson, create a project that exemplifies what you learned and upload it using the link below. Once you've completed all five lessons, don't forget to grab the graphic above to proclaim your graduation status!
All entries must be submitted by noon EDT on August 14. Winners will be announced here on the blog on Saturday, August 15.
As a Summer School student, you have three ways to win:
To be eligible to win a $15 voucher: Subscribe to our YouTube channel and comment on today’s video. Winners will be chosen randomly from comments on the YouTube video.
To be eligible to win a $25 voucher: Complete today’s homework and upload an image via InLinkz on today’s post. Winners will be chosen randomly from each day’s InLinkz entries.
To be eligible to win the $100 Grand Prize: Graduate from Summer School by completing all five days of homework (via the InLinkz on each blog post). One random winner will be chosen for the week.
We can't wait to see what you create!

Another wonderful lesson. I had to go to google (and my art major, daughter) for a little more understanding. I hope the card I submitted is showing this technique correctly.
Hi, Karolyn -
The card you made for us as well as many of the extras you shared) was really clean and beautiful. I will try to feature white space more. I agree w/ you about doing 2x certain design elements such as (in your card) the tree top, the surfboard, and the sun. The dimension adds just that extra little pop.
Keep up the good work and thanks for the ideas.
Learning so much! Wish these could continue. All sooo cute.
Your cards are terrific and perfect examples of the importance of white space. Love them!
Finished all 5 days – Yeah I graduated – it was a fun ride! Thanks for having the Summer School
A great set of videos and wonderful clear inspiration! Super card examples makes it a fun hop!! Thanks!!
I have always struggled with white space so thank you for this!
This has been LOADS of fun! I have throughly enjoyed Summer School, I can’t say thank you enough for all those who made this possible!
I love the stamp set and the design tips have been very helpful. Off to practice!
Thanks for sharing what white space is – I find it really difficult to control myself when crafting and always feel that I have to fill every bit of the card with ‘stuff’ – lol
Enjoyed all 5 days. Just posted Ombre so will work on White Space now.
