A Blizzard of Inspiration Headed Your Way — Come Create in Color with Sandy!

With winter just around the corner, (I know...boo! hiss! Unless you're a fan of winter, in which case: woohoo!) Sandy's Create in Color project this month is so timely. There are several ways to craft a snowy background for your scenes, but this one is super easy and such a treat to watch take shape. We love her suggestion to get the kids involved with this one — they would love it. Ready to see what she created to spotlight the adorable Jingle Hugs image? Keep reading!

Hello again colorists! It’s Sandy Allnock, and I’m back again with some fun watercoloring this time. I think this is a background you’ll find lots of fun!

It looks like a blizzard right? It’s SO easy to create — all you need is a little salt to pair up with your watercolors. Watch the video to see how!

Wasn’t that fun? Just watching the salt slowly do its thing is mesmerizing. Before applying salt, see if you can tilt the paper to get rid of any giant puddles of water - if it’s too much, it just overwhelms the salt.

Experiment with how dry the paper is before adding salt. I found it worked best when it was still shiny but not soppy and puddly wet.

Be sure to let it dry completely before rubbing off the salt so your fingers don’t smoosh color around. You’ll feel it if the salt is damp under your fingers.

If you don’t want to paint around the image carefully like I did, just paint a rectangular background and add the figure as a die cut. I hope this is a technique you’ll try! Your kids would love to help make holiday cards with this technique, wouldn’t they?

Have an awesome and creative day!
