Charming and unique holiday decorations help to give your home a cozy charm during the winter months. Making these decorations by hand rather than buying them from a store gives an even more personal touch, and gives you a holiday item that you will want to pass down from generation to generation.
Debbie’s Loopy Bloom Tree is one of our favorite holiday projects, and today we have a fabulous step-by-step tutorial for you.
You’ll start with a paper mâché cone from a local craft store as your base. The cone in our example is 11″ tall, with a 3 3/4″ diameter base. The tutorial below is based on this size, but you can easily adjust the supplies to work with different sized cones.
Let’s get started with the cutting.
- Die-cut 20 Loopy Blooms from Jellybean Green Card Stock or Jellybean Green felt.
- Die-cut 16 ornaments from Smooth White Card Stock (four of each shape) and 16 ornament toppers from Kraft Card Stock.
- Die-cut 6 mini tags from Kraft Card Stock and six mini tags from Smooth White Card Stock.
- Die-cut 12 small poinsettias from Electric Red Card Stock.
- Die-cut 2 of the second largest Star STAX from Smooth White Card Stock.
Now we are ready to assemble the tree. Cut each Loopy Bloom die cut in half, lengthwise. Using a thin paint brush or paper piercer, curl the bottom edge of the Loopy Blooms upward.
Hot glue a length of Jellybean Green Grosgrain Ribbon along the bottom edge of the paper mâché cone.
Apply a bead of hot glue above the ribbon and begin to adhere the curled Loopy Bloom halves. Glue the Loopy Blooms row by row. Do not overlap the Loopy Blooms within each row, trim die cuts as needed using scissors. Glue each successive row of Loopy Blooms directly above the previous row. Continue in this manner until you are ½” from the top of the cone.
Push a pin through the top of the cone and hot glue a small piece of Jellybean Green Grosgrain Ribbon around the top of the cone.
Stamp and embellish the ornaments as desired using images from the Christmas Ornaments Stamp Set, clear rhinestones, and MIX-ables Glitter Glaze. Glue an ornament topper to each ornament and add a small hemp bow. Stamp small, festive words on the mini tags and adhere a tiny rhinestone to each tag. Then adhere a rhinestone to the center of each small poinsettia.
Score each Star STAX die cut from each point straight across the star. Fold the stars on the score lines to form a three-dimensional star. Spray stars with MIX-ables Sheer Shimmer Mist and let the starts dry.
Stack several foam squares together and glue them to the center of the back of one of the stars. Push a pin through center of your stack of foam squares. Remove the liner from the top foam square and apply a small amount of liquid adhesive to the back of the points of the other star. Line the two stars up and glue them together. Apply a bit of pressure to the points until the glue dries.
“Trim” your tree by adhering the ornaments, tags, and poinsettias to the tree as desired using a hot glue gun. Gently insert the star assembly into the top of the tree.
Now it’s your turn! Put your own special touches on your tree and proudly display it for holiday guests to rave about!
